CO₂NSEQUENCE 09

Clean Energy Jobs Now. Or Pay Later. Doesn’t this sound too good to be true? A society where “eco-jobs” flourish while the usual environmentally unfriendly jobs begin a decline into the abyss. Ah… I like the thought of it. And you should too! This too-good-to-be-true idea is within your grasp. As they put it “YOUR VOICE CO₂UNTS.” If you cannot tell by now they are pretty big on the idea of CO₂ emissions and don’t you think it’s clever to put a 2 anywhere there is a CO? I think so, but that’s just me. Basically, the goal of CO₂SEQUENCE is to establish a detailed and well thought out energy and climate plan which will result in clean energy job, or “ecobs” as I call it, less pollution in the environment, as well as a secure America. If we as a nation and as a world fail to act there can be devastating consequences. These consequences do not only apply to our environment and its future, but to our economy, security, and even the human race (health factors, etc).

In order to send our message to Congress about this ever increasing problem, CO₂NSEQUENCE is educating and organizing the people, especially the youth, in the effort to vote for an eco-America. By doing so, this movement hopes to create millions of “ecobs,” reduce our dependency on foreign oil,  and save our environment in order to try to reduce the effects of Global Climate Change.

If you go to the site (click the hyperlinks) you will find that you can register yourself to receive emails from CO₂NSEQUENCE that notify you of the progress that we are making as well as events that are happening in the world as well as in your own town. You will also find that there is a challenge on the site. It is called the Organize to Be Heard Challenge. What this consists of is raising awareness about the energy and climate problems, getting people involved, informing your politicians about the problem, and getting it fixed. There is a point system that is used based on what you do to help. You can have people sign a petition showing that you are ready for the change. You could start a phone drive and call residents of your town or state and your politicians and inform them of the change that is needed. You can even go as far as to organize a rally and have the media notice the event and broadcast it on television. It really does not matter what you do to get the point across as long as we progress toward the right direction.

Remember, the youth of the world will lose and suffer the most if we do not start taking steps in the right direction. But it does not have to be that way. The youth have so much to gain from the opportunities presented in a new clean energy economy and a healthier planet. Do you want to see the world spiral downhill and have those to come live in what will become a desolate wasteland? I wouldn’t. And this is why the CO₂NSEQUENCE Movement receives the MPSN Seal of Approval.

Hey Nerds!

Last year, in introductory english comp, I remember sitting next to a guy who NEVER paid attention in class. He spent the entire period searching the web for new, entertaining things to cure his boredom. Usually, his prescription was youtube videos or online games, but one day he came across FreeRice.com, and it spread through the school like wildfire.

The concept is simple: if you play their free online vocabulary games, then for every question you answer correctly, 10 grains of rice are donated to the UN to feed starving countries. Cool huh? Seems like a win-win situation. You get to expand your mind, and starving people get to eat.

It’s actually a little more complicated than that… but that basic concept is still the same. You still are required to play the game (which is free and doesn’t need you to enter email addresses or anything), but neither the money nor the rice actually come from FreeRice.com. FreeRice has an agreement with numerous sponsors, who trade money for food in exchange for advertising space. When people play the game, ads are shown. But there’s a twist: ads only show up when you answer a question CORRECTLY. For every correct answer, an ad is shown, and the sponsor donates the money for 10 grains of rice to the UN.

This all costs you NOTHING… well, except for internet costs…

So far, this simple method has donated almost 70 BILLION grains of rice to countries like Bangladesh, Cambodia, and Uganda – among others. In fact there were exactly 24,830,100 grains donated just yesterday (Oct 25). And the numbers are still growing!!

Since the site launched in 2007, there have been a few improvements. Now, you can keep track of exactly how much rice you’re responsible for donating, you can have words pronounced for you, and you can choose from a variety of subjects ranging from french vocabulary (my personal favorite) to symbols of the periodic table!!

To wrap all of this humanitarian goodness up, FreeRice is COMPLETELY NON-PROFIT. Absolutely no money goes into the pockets of the programmers in exchange for their countless hours of coding and updating. It just doesn’t get better than that.

Congratulations to the S4S program from Invisible Children!

Since it’s origin in the Spring of 2007, the Schools for Schools program has raised over $4 million for the building of schools in northern Uganda. So far, their efforts have been able to lower the average student:teacher ratio from 183:1 to 94:1, or almost 50%. Recently, the program has grown to include the building of latrines to promote sanitation, War-Trauma counseling services for the public, a method of making strong bricks from soil  to save on resources, and methods of collecting rainwater to promote health.

The program is powered not only by the spirit of goodwill, but also that of competition. Schools from all over the world sign on to donate money toward the cause. The schools are put into groups called “clusters.” The cluster that raises the most money will get to choose representatives to travel to Uganda to give firsthand assistance to the effort – all expenses paid!

The deadline for this phase of the program is December 17, so if you want your school to join in, you had better hurry! And if you don’t wish to take part in the competition, donations of money or books are always welcome.
